A little bit about me

My name is Mervi Maria, and I am a freelance creative from Finland.

The idea for Werkshoppe and a creative lifestyle blog was born, soon after, I took the plunge and resigned from my 4-year-day-job as a project manager, in a Helsinki based communications agency. It was a complete leap of faith, but had to be done as it wasn't giving me the right kind of satisfaction anymore. I have been blogging before (over at My Best Friend Jules), and ever since I stopped, I've missed it.

But the idea for the blog was left brewing, because me and partner decided to make life a little more adventurous. We packed our bags and moved to Australia in 2013, for a year. It has been one of the best decisions. It gave me the much needed distance to my "everyday life" and a new outlook on life. It really isn't all that serious - so what if things don't always work out. It's up to you how you make it all come together.

Now a year of adventure and self-reflection has passed and it is time to make this blog a reality.

I am personally all about making play into work and trying something different! I want to encourage people to break their boundaries and follow their dreams. As cliche as this sounds, doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will... so we all should ask ourselves - if not now, when?

So let this blog be my creative outlet, and place where I can share my design work and connect with like-minded people. I will be blogging about design, typography, food, interior design, pretty things... anything that's a little bit out of the ordinary and ordinary that's just plain awesome. I hope you follow along!

I've been raised admiring the simple and functional Scandinavian design and this definitely comes through in my design work. My aesthetic is all about light and airy layouts with fresh color combos, yummy fonts and clear navigation. With that said, I also love bold prints, textures and colorful patterns. With the right balance, a good design work can have both - a hint of unexpected mixed with clean simplicity.

I seek inspiration in the little ordinary things. Quirky and cute daily objects that evoke conversation often tickle my fancy. My love of everything vintage also sparks inspiration because I feel old objects have their own unique story to unravel. In a nutshell, I'd describe my design style modern with retro twist.
